Whale Sharks - Grupo Mayan
Many Grupo Mayan visitors and guests arrive in the vicinity of Riviera Maya area with no plans on going scuba diving however after seeing the calm warm water of the Caribbean they quickly change their minds. Many had not brought any of their gear with them knowing they were not going inot the deep. Fortunately Grupo Mayan has available to rent equipment for every need.
Many Grupo Mayan visitors find they cannot pass the opportunity for completing a little reef diving or the chance to see one of the biggest clownfish in the sea.
Grupo Mayan guests needing a guide can obtain one from Ocean Divers. Their guides are full of abundant energy at any hour of the day be it morning, noon or night. When going by boat to the dive site the boats generally have some minor refreshments aboard.
When boarding the boat you will find a 30-foot center console boat with a pair of 275hp Mercury type outboards. The boats are generally well maintained and quite capable of transporting divers to their dive locations. Grupo Mayan guests usually get a boat manned by a 2 man crew that will give your the impression they are well competence and possess vast knowledge involving their local water.
Grupo Mayan guests can plan for about an half hour boat ride until they arrive at the location where normally the whale shark tend to congregate. As you get ready to take the plunge you notice what a beautiful day it is as the sun begins to beat down upon you. Grupo Mayan divers say it usually takes approximately forty minutes until you locate your first adult whale shark. While waiting this forty minutes you will usually find that all the eyes aboard the boat are scanning the sea looking closely for any sign of a fin.
There will usually be 2 or 3 people dropping in the sea at a time along with the guide leading each scheduled encounter. The boat pilot will generally position his boat in the line of a whale shark while the divers will sit patiently on the gunwale waiting for the signal to drop into the sea. Grandmaya divers are forbidden to harass or touching the whale sharks. Everyone has to wear a horse collar vest or a wetsuit, although you are not usually required to inflate the vest.
When these encounters with the sharks do occur Grupo Mayan divers say they are brief and may require some very fast swimming to even get a view of them.
